RESUMEN

Actualmente el mal nombrado Síndrome Premenstrual (SPM) afecta a un número muy elevado de mujeres y aun siendo un término injustificado, se ha convertido en parte del lenguaje cotidiano. Muchos modelos de los que se parte para estudiar éste fenómeno son unidireccionales mientras que otros reconocen explícitamente factores sociales. Éste artículo describe los orígenes y desarrollo del concepto de SPM así como una revisión crítica de las diferentes aproximaciones al fenómeno, teniendo en cuenta el papel a desempeñar por las ciencias sociales.

ABSTRACT

Nowadays the incorrectly named Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) affects a very high number of women. Even being an unjustified nomination, it has become part of everyday language. Most of the models designed to study this phenomenon are unidirectional, while others recognize specifically social factors. This article describes the origins and development of the concept of PMS. It also reviews critically different approaches to it, regarding to the role that social sciences should take.
